Uses
Abilify (Aripiprazole) is an antipsychotic drug used to treat patients for schizophrenia. It can help to reduce symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, aggressive behaviour, a lack of interest in life and strong emotions. In addition to this, it may be used to treat bipolar disorder, or to treat mood swings and other aggressive behaviour in certain autistic patients. The main ingredient in this drug works by altering the activity of neurotransmitters in the patient's brain.

Dosage and Administration
All patients must consult their doctor before taking Abilify (Aripiprazole), so that a suitable dosage regimen can be prescribed. If you are treating schizophrenia, it is possible that your doctor will tell you to take an initial dose of 10mg to 15mg, once per day. The dosage will generally not be adjusted before two weeks (so as to achieve a steady state), however, the doctor may decide to prescribe a maintenance dose raging from 10mg to 30mg, taken once per day. Treatment of bipolar disorder or other conditions may require a different dosage regimen, and in all cases, the prescribing doctor will determine the correct dosage.

Side effects
Abilify (Aripiprazole) may cause:

  • Insomnia
  • Sleepiness
  • Dizzy sensation
  • Increased salivation
  • An increase in weight

Tell your doctor if any side effects occur. It is very important to be aware of the fact that serious side effects can occur. You must immediately see your doctor if you notice stiffness of the muscles, uncontrollable movements of the face or body, seizures, decreased urination, fever or any other reactions which have not been mentioned in this paragraph.

Precautions
Because this medication can increase the risk of death in older adults suffering from dementia, it must not be prescribed to treat dementia in older adults.

If a worsening of depression occurs, or if the patient experiences suicidal thoughts, immediate medical care is necessary. Also, during the course of treatment, patients are advised to note that this drug can increase the risk of heat stroke. Avoid exercise in hot weather, and take any other precautions you deem necessary in order to avoid heat stroke.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Abilify (Aripiprazole) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
  • If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
  • If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
  • If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
