Uses
Aricept (Donepezil Hydrochloride) belongs to a class of drugs referred to as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, and it works by preventing a chemical known as acetylcholine from being broken down. This makes it an effective treatment for patients suffering from dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease, as patients affected by dementia generally have lower than normal levels of this chemical present in their brain.

Acetylcholine is important for memory, social interaction and the ability to perform daily tasks. Preventing this chemical from being broken down may make it easier for patients with dementia to think clearly and perform daily tasks, however, it is not a cure for Alzheimer's disease nor will it prevent these abilities from being lost.

Dosage and Administration
When prescribing Aricept (Donepezil Hydrochloride), your doctor will take various factors into account, such as the seriousness of the condition and your medical history. Mild to moderate Alzheimer's is often treated with a dose of 5mg, taken once per day, however, in some cases, a dose of 10mg taken once per day may be prescribed. If the condition is more severe, a higher dose may be necessary. The dosage instructions given by your doctor must be strictly adhered to throughout the course of treatment.

Side effects
Aricept (Donepezil Hydrochloride) may cause:

• Aggression
• Weight loss
• Increased urination
• A decreased appetite
• Pain or cramps affecting the muscles

If you feel unwell, inform your doctor. Severe side effects which require immediate medical attention may be experienced, however, this is uncommon. You must immediately see your doctor if you notice painful urination, loss of urinary control, coughing up blood, bloody vomit, bloody stools or any other signs that you are suffering from serious side effects.

Precautions
Before you can start taking this medication, you must inform your doctor if there is a history of medical problems related to breathing, urination problems, diseases affecting the stomach or intestines, seizures, heart disease or fainting.

If you become dizzy or drowsy, you should not operate machinery or drive.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Aricept (Donepezil Hydrochloride) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• If you suffer from any allergies.
• If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
• If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
• If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
