Description

Main Use Active Ingredient Marketed Name
Endometriosis Danazol Danogen-50

Uses
Danogen-50 (Danazol) is indicated for the treatment of pain and other symptoms caused by endometriosis. It is also used to treat benign fibrocystic breast disease and hereditary angioedema. The main ingredient in this medicine is a synthetic androgen which is quite similar to testosterone, and when taken, it reduces the levels of oestrogen in the body while also increasing the androgen levels. This may help to control the excess growth of endometriotic tissue (as this tissue growth is caused by hormonal disturbances).

It may even help to relieve pain and prevent a worsening of the condition. However, this medicine is usually only considered when other treatments have failed, due to the risk of masculinisation and other side effects. Other potential uses have been studied, such as its effects if used for thrombocytopenia in those suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome, ITP and menorrhagia. However, it is generally not prescribed for these conditions.

Dosage and Administration
Danogen-50 (Danazol) is used for different conditions, and patients should note that the required dosage regimen will be individualised by their doctor, with various factors being taken into consideration. This medicine comes as 50mg capsules, which are taken orally. The dosage for fibrocystic breast disease usually ranges from 50mg to 200mg taken twice per day. Treatment usually commences during menstruation. Patients may notice a reduction in pain and other symptoms after 1 to 3 months of treatment, and 4 to 6 months may be needed in order for nodules to disappear.

In the event of a recurrence of symptoms, the patient may be told to start treatment again. The dosage for endometriosis may be different, and patients treating this condition may also need to start treatment during a menstrual period. The actual dosage regimen required may differ from the examples here, and therefore patients should only take the medicine in accordance with the instructions their doctor gives them.

Precautions
Although rare, there have been reports of this medicine causing serious blood clots or benign intracranial hypertension. Seek medical attention immediately if any symptoms of these conditions are noticed.
