Uses
Estrofem (Oestradiol) (sometimes spelled estradiol) is a female hormone which is used to replace depleted levels of oestrogen, occurring as a result of the menopause. It may also be used to prevent osteoporosis. Menopausal symptoms such as sudden waves of body heat and vaginal dryness or irritation may occur as a result of decreased oestrogen production. The purpose of taking these tablets is to replace the oestrogen which is not being produced by the body as a result of the menopause, thereby treating and providing relief from unpleasant menopausal symptoms.

Dosage and Administration
It is essential that all patients taking Estrofem (Oestradiol) see their doctor for a thorough medical examination. The prescribing doctor will give the patient clear and concise dosage instructions, such as how often to take it, and how much to take. This medicine comes in a packet of 28 tablets, each of which contains the active ingredient. Your doctor will tell you when to start taking it, as it may need to be taken according to your menstrual cycle. Regular medical checkups and mammograms will be necessary during the course of treatment, and your doctor will evaluate your progress at 3 to 6 month intervals, to decide whether or not treatment should continue.

Side effects
While undergoing treatment with Estrofem (Oestradiol), some side effects may occur, such as:

• Thinning or loss of hair
• Breakthrough bleeding
• Vaginal discharge or itchiness
• Tenderness, pain or swelling of the breasts
• Freckles or darkened skin noticeable on the face

You must inform your doctor of all reactions or side effects which occur while you are taking these tablets. If you notice any symptoms of a severe reaction, immediate medical attention is necessary. Some examples of this include a lump on the breast, swelling of the stomach, strange vaginal bleeding, severe coughing, pain in the joints or any other reactions which have not been listed here.

Precautions
Patients should be aware that oestrogens may increase the risk of cancer of the uterus. Some patients may be prescribed a progestin in order to reduce the risk of this.

Postmenopausal women taken oestrogens may also be at an increased risk of other conditions, such as dementia, strokes and serious blood clots. It is necessary to ensure that the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks before taking these tablets.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Estrofem (Oestradiol) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• If you suffer from any allergies.
• If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
• If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
• If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
