Uses
Locoid Lipocream (Hydrocortisone Butyrate) is used to relieve itching, redness and inflammation caused by eczema and other types of dermatitis. It is an anti-inflammatory topical corticosteroid which works by causing the induction of lipocortins. This helps to control the production and release of substances that can cause inflammation and itching (including leukotrienes and prostaglandins).

In addition to reducing swelling and pruritis, this medicine also has a vasoconstrictive effect, meaning that it can reverse the widening of the blood vessels that is known to be a key contributing factor to the pain and inflammation associated with dermatitis. Patients have also used this cream to treat psoriasis and other inflammatory skin disorders. However, it will only work for conditions responsive to corticosteroid therapy.

Dosage and Administration
Locoid Lipocream (Hydrocortisone Butyrate) is provided in a 30g tube, and this particular version is a 0.1 per cent formulation. Your doctor will assess the severity of your skin condition, and will also decide whether or not topical corticosteroid therapy is suitable. Usually, treatment is stopped when the symptoms have been sufficiently controlled, so as to avoid the potential risks of long term treatment (these can include accidental transdermal absorption of the active ingredient).

Upon diagnosis of your condition, the doctor may instruct you to gently rub a thin layer of the cream to the area of your skin that is affected 2 to 3 times per day. The duration of time for which treatment will be required to continue may vary, based on individual factors. Your doctor will tell you how long treatment will be needed to continue for and it is necessary that you comply with the instructions given.
