Uses
Methimez (Methimazole) is used to treat an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). This condition occurs when the thyroid produces an excessive volume of thyroid hormone, which can lead to various health complications. In some cases, this medication may be taken prior to the commencement of radioactive iodine therapy or thyroid surgery.

Dosage and Administration
Treating an overactive thyroid with Methimez (Methimazole) requires that you consult your doctor for a thorough medical examination. Based on your condition, your doctor will then determine the most suitable dosage, and provide you with accurate dosage instructions which you must strictly adhere to. Mild hyperthyroidism is usually treated with 5mg taken by mouth every 8 hours. Patients affected by moderately severe hyperthyroidism are often told to take 10mg by mouth at 8 hour intervals (however, the maximum prescribed dose is 40mg per day). Severe symptoms may require 20mg taken every 8 hours. The maintenance dose is different, and ranges from 5mg to 15mg per day.

Treating an overactive thyroid with Methimez (Methimazole) can cause side effects, such as:

  • Itching
  • Loss of hair
  • Decreased sense of taste
  • Pain affecting the joints and muscles
  • A reduced amount of white blood cells or platelets

Serious reactions requiring immediate medical attention may also occur. You need to see your doctor as soon as possible if you notice a sore throat, fever, bloody urine or stools or any other symptoms of a severe reaction.
