Uses
Ovestin (Oestriol) is a medication containing oestriol, which is a natural form of the female hormone oestrogen. It is prescribed to women who are going through (or have already gone through) the menopause, to treat hot flushes, irritation and dryness of the vagina, urinary tract infections and mild urinary incontinence. This medicine is used to supplement the decreased levels of oestrogen in the patient's body, which can help to relieve vaginal menopause symptoms. Other conditions there tablets are used to treat include infertility occurring as a result of cervical hostility, and atrophy of the urogenital tract.

Dosage and Administration
Ovestin (Oestriol) comes as tablets, which you need to take strictly in accordance with your doctor's instructions. These tablets are generally used as a short term treatment of vaginal menopausal symptoms.

It is possible that the prescribing doctor will direct you to take a daily dose of 4mg to 8mg per day if you are using this drug for treating hot flushes or other menopausal symptoms. Your dosage may be reduced after 5 to 7 days of treatment, and a maintenance dose (which is usually lower than the initial dose) will be prescribed. This may be continued for 1 to 3 weeks if your doctor deems it necessary. If your doctor decides that long term treatment is required, regular medical reviews will be necessary. These tablets are not normally prescribed for longer than 12 months.

Side effects
Women who have been prescribed Ovestin (Oestriol) tablets should note that some side effects may be noticed during treatment, such as:

  • Thrush
  • Changes in libido
  • Breast tenderness or swelling
  • Increased or excess cervical mucus production
  • Indigestion, flatulence or pain in the abdomen

You are advised to let your doctor known about any side effects which occur while taking these tablets. Rare but more serious side effects are also possible. You must see your doctor immediately if you notice signs of gall bladder disease, peripheral oedema, blood clots, increased blood pressure, depression or any other signs of a serious side effect.

Precautions
Research has shown that in some cases, HRT (hormone replacement therapy) may slightly increase the risk of a stroke. You are advised to discuss the risks of this with your doctor before starting treatment with these tablets.

In some cases, the risk of certain types of cancer may be increased due to taking these tablets. Regular medical check-ups will be ordered by your doctor to ensure that you are healthy and able to continue treatment.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Ovestin (Oestriol) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
  • If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
  • If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
