Maintenance treatment for asthma Salmeterol Serevent Inhaler

Uses
Serevent Inhaler (Salmeterol) is a bronchodilator used for asthma, and its mode of action involves causing the muscles in the airways to relax and widen, so as to make breathing easier. It has also indicated for the treatment of COPD exacerbation (a rapid worsening of symptoms, often accompanied by excess amounts of mucus being produced). The active ingredient in this medicine is a type of beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist, and when inhaled regularly as part of a long term control and maintenance treatment, it can help to lessen the severity and frequency of asthma attacks.

This is achieved by acting on the beta 2 receptors in the lungs, which triggers a widening of the airways, making it easier to breathe. However, this medicine will not work as quickly as other short acting beta 2 agonists, but it can help to keep the airways open for a longer period of time. For this reason, it is often referred to as a long acting beta adrenoceptor agonist. It is generally used when other medicines have not effectively controlled asthma symptoms, and doctors may prescribe it alongside other medicines (it is not normally used on its own).

Dosage and Administration
Serevent Inhaler (Salmeterol) should be administered by oral inhalation. An inhalation device containing sufficient medicine for 120 doses is provided. You will need to use it according to the instructions given by your doctor. If used for bronchodilation maintenance or to prevent the occurrence of asthma symptoms, adult patients may be told to administer 2 doses twice per day (once in the morning and again in the evening, with an interval of 12 hours in between). However, the exact amount may vary and because of this, it is very important that you only use the amount your doctor tells you to use.

Side effects
Use of Serevent Inhaler (Salmeterol) for treating breathing problems may cause:

  • Sore teeth
  • Nasal congestion
  • Muscular cramping
  • Irritation affecting the throat
  • Soreness occurring in the joints or muscles

Tell your doctor about any reactions you experience during treatment. It is important to be aware that there is a possibility of serious reactions which will require immediate medical treatment. Examples of this can include tremors, asthma symptoms which are more serious than usual, low potassium levels and other reactions which have not been listed here.

Precautions
This medicine is not a quick relief inhaler, and it is not for use to provide rapid relief from a sudden asthma attack. Your doctor will prescribe another type of inhaler for this.

Regular blood tests may be needed so as to monitor potassium levels.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Serevent Inhaler (Salmeterol) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
  • If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
