Uses
Trima (Moclobemide) is an antidepressant. It is known as a reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A (RIMA), which is a type of MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor). Indications include major depressive episodes, social phobia (a condition which causes people to experience fear in social situations) and dysthymia. Due to the lack of cardiovascular, anticholinergic and sedative effects associated with this drug, it is often considered over other antidepressant medicines.

Other antidepressants may also have a negative effect on the sexual function and libido of patients, however, many experts believe that this medicine may improve erection or ejaculation dysfunction. Researchers have conducted studies on this drug to determine if it may be effective for other conditions. This research primarily focused on conditions such as migraine, chronic tension headaches, fibromyalgia, panic disorder, smoking cessation and other conditions which have not been mentioned here.

Dosage and Administration
Trima (Moclobemide) comes as 300mg tablets. Your doctor will tell you about the dosage requirements. Adults treating social phobia are sometimes told to begin treatment with a dosage of 150mg taken twice per day for 3 days. This may then be increased by the doctor to 300mg twice per day.

The dosage for depression may differ slightly. It is possible that the patient will be told to begin with 300mg per day, either as two 150mg tablets or else one tablet containing 300mg. If the doctor deems it necessary, the dosage may be increased, and the patient told to take 600mg per day, as either 4 of the 150mg tablets or else two of the300mg tablets. However, doctors generally only increase the dosage after one week of treatment. In some cases, the dosage may be reduced to 150mg a day, based on your response to treatment.

Side effects
Patients who have been directed by their doctor to undergo treatment with Trima (Moclobemide) may experience side effects, and a list of examples is given here:

  • Headache
  • Dry mouth
  • Disorientation
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Pins and needles

Your doctor should be informed of all side effects that occur. Other side effects which have not been listed here may also occur. You must go to the hospital immediately if any serious reactions occur.

Precautions
Patients should not consume large quantities of any food that contains tyramine (a type of amino acid), as this may result in high blood pressure.

Some patients may experience hyponatraemia (a drop in blood sodium levels). You will need to see your doctor straight away if this happens.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Trima (Moclobemide) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
