Uses
Flixonase Nasal Spray (Fluticasone Propionate) is an intranasal corticosteroid indicated for the treatment of hay fever and other allergies. Its mechanism of action is decreasing inflammation directly inside the nasal passages. Medical studies have confirmed its effectiveness in reducing nasal symptoms (a blocked nose, rhinitis and sneezing) caused by pollen exposure, allergies triggered by pets, dust mites or other allergens. In addition to treating seasonal allergic rhinitis, it may also be used for perennial (year round) allergies and nonallergic rhinitis.
The active ingredient in this spray is classified as a trifluorinated corticosteroid, and is synthetic. It exhibits a broad range of anti-inflammatory activity, and when applied to the nasal mucosa, can act on histamines and other blood cells that are known to contribute to inflammation. Other potent mediators of inflammation (such as leukotrienes) are also affected. This in turn prevents the inflammatory response caused by allergies and helps relieve the nasal symptoms listed above. Researchers have also studied its potential benefits if used for nasal polyps.
Dosage and Administration
Flixonase Nasal Spray (Fluticasone Propionate) comes in a special applicator which contains enough medicine to provide 120 actuations (metered doses). It should be inserted into the nose and the required amount of sprays delivered to the nasal mucosa so that it can be absorbed where it is needed most. Your doctor will decide on the daily dosage and the amount of sprays required for each dose. In all cases, it is extremely important that you closely adhere to all directions given by the doctor, as overuse of corticosteroids can often result in side effects, some of which could be serious.
