Hepatitis C infection Sofosbuvir Hepcvir

Hepcvir (Sofosbuvir) is prescribed to patients who have contracted chronic hepatitis C in genotype 1, 2, 3 and 4. It is not used alone. It needs to be taken with Ribavirin and Pegylated interferon. Sofosbuvir can be taken by patients awaiting liver transplantation, as well as by patients with HCV/HIV-1 co-infection.

Sofosbuvir stops the Hepatitus C virus from replicating.

Dosage and Administration
Hepcvir is usually prescribed at a strating dose of one 400mg tablet each day. Each tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. It can be taken with or without food. Sofosbuvir must be used as part of a combination treatment.

  • For HCV genotype 1 or 4 Hepcvir (Sofosbuvir) should be taken with Ribavirin and Pegylated Interferon for 12 weeks.
  • For HCV genotype 2 takes Hepcvir (Sofosbuvir) should be taken with Ribavirin for 12 weeks (without interferon).
  • For HCV genotype 3 takes Hepcvir (sofosbuvir) hould be taken with Ribavirin for 24 weeks (without interferon).

Depending on results, your doctor may change your dosage during treatment. Your doctor or health care provider will be able to advise you more specifically on your required dosage.

Side effects
Some mild side effects when taking Hepcvir are common. If you suffer from any of the following, contact your doctor if they become troublesome:

  • Headache
  • Insomnia
  • Tiredness
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness

Some side effects can be more serious. If you have unusual experiences or problems, you should contact your doctor or health care provider immediately.

Do not take this Hepcvir (Sofosbuvir) by itself. It should only be taken in combination with ribavarin and/or pegylated interferon.

Using Hepcvir (Sofosbuvir) together with ribavirin while you are pregnant is contraindicated. It can harm your unborn baby.  The combination of Hepcvir (Sofosbuvir), Ribavirin and Pegylated interferon can cause serious birth defects. Do not use Sofosbuvir when pregnant. If you are not pregnant, make sure to use contraception duing treatment and for 6 months after stopping treatment. If a pregnancy occurs to mother, while either partners are using these medicines at the time, tell your doctor right away.

To make sure you are not pregnant, your doctor may ask you to have a pregnancy test before you start using this medicine. You must have a negative pregnancy test before you will be allowed to use this medicine with ribavirin. 

Tell your doctor if you are on any other drugs (prescription or over-the-counter medicines) or and herbal treatments or nutritional supplements. Tell your doctor if you are breast feeding, or decide to change dosage or stop taking Hepcvir (Sofosbuvir), you should discussed with your doctor before hand.
