Uses
Muse (Alprostadil) is an erectile dysfunction treatment in the form of a urethral suppository. The active ingredient in this medicine is also known as PGE1 (prostaglandin E1) and it is a type of acidic lipid that occurs naturally. It is renowned for its function as a vasodilator. When it is administered locally (in the urethra), it affects the cavernosal arteries in the penis and the smooth muscle of the corpora cavernosa.
This causes the widening of blood vessels going into in the penis, allowing more blood to enter it. Also, blood vessels that exit the penis become narrower which prevents blood from exiting. This increased flow of blood into the tissues of the penis results in an erection usually occurring 10 minutes after administration. It also helps the patient to maintain the erection, allowing most men to engage in sexual intercourse.
Dosage and Administration
Muse (Alprostadil) comes in the form of single-use urethral applicators, and there are 6 of these applicators provided, which is enough for 6 doses. Each applicator contains a pellet of medicine. Prior to administration, you are advised to urinate. This is because insertion of the pellet is easier if the urethra is moist, and urine also helps to dissolve the medicine. Your doctor will need to teach you how to correctly administer it, so as to ensure that improper use is prevented.
To apply it, you must stretch the penis upwards and gently insert the stem of the applicator into the urethra. The pellet is released by pressing on the applicator. Most patients experience an erection 10 minutes later, and the erection usually lasts for at least 30 minutes (however, it normally will not last longer than 60 minutes). Patients will also be told that the first time it is administered must be in the presence of a doctor. This is so the effects of the medicine can be observed, and the suitability of it confirmed. If it is deemed suitable by your doctor, you will be told the correct dosage, as well as the proper application procedure. Doctors generally state that it should not be administered more than twice in any period of 24 hours.
Side effects
Adult men who use Muse (Alprostadil) as a transurethral treatment for erectile dysfunction may experience side effects, such as:
It is important that your doctor is made aware of any side effects that occur. Remember that severe reactions are possible. This is considered to be less common. However, you must seek immediate medical treatment if you experience a painful erection which lasts for more than 3 hours (priapism), bruising or bleeding where the medicine was administered, urine containing blood, extreme pain affecting the urethra or penis, lumps or unusual shaping of the penis or any other severe reactions that have not been listed here.
Precautions
This medicine must not be used by patients affected by deformation of the penis, those who have a penile implant, patients who have been advised by a doctor not to engage in sexual intercourse due to health complications, people suffering from penile fibrosis, sickle cell anaemia, leukaemia or bone marrow tumours (multiple myeloma).
It must be noted that this erectile dysfunction treatment is only for use in adult men. If the female partner is pregnant, ask your doctor. The doctor will recommend using a condom (to protect the unborn child) or avoiding intercourse. In addition to this, patients should be aware of the fact that this medicine is not a contraceptive, and it will also not prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Muse (Alprostadil) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
