Uses
Spectra 25 (Doxepin) is a tricyclic antidepressant which works for depression by acting on the neurotransmitters in the brain. More specifically, it is referred to by medical professionals as a dibenzoxepin tricyclic compound. Medical experts have hypothesized that its psychotherapeutic benefits are derived from preventing the reuptake of noradrenaline. This in turn helps to prevent noradrenaline from becoming deactivated, which helps to ensure that any noradrenaline that is released from the nerve cells in the brain is able to continue exhibiting a positive effect on the mood of the patient.
Because this medicine can make patients drowsy and sleepy, it is often used to treat depression associated with anxiety and difficulty sleeping. Other conditions for which it has been used include manic-depressive disorders, psychiatric problems and nervousness caused by alcoholism. Treatment will not start to work instantly, and patients may need to take it for roughly 2 to 4 weeks (or possibly more, depending on the individual response) until an improvement in symptoms occurs.
Dosage and Administration
Spectra 25 (Doxepin) capsules come as a 25mg strength formula, and the dosage will be tailored by your doctor so as to suit your individual needs. Adults treating depression that is deemed to be mild may be told to start out with 25mg per day. Based on the response, the doctor may decide to increase the dosage for maintenance treatment. Patients with moderate depression are sometimes directed to start out with 75mg per day (as 1 to 3 separate doses), and severe symptoms may require an even higher starting dose. Always follow the instructions given by your doctor.
