Uses
Abilify (Aripiprazole) is a second generation antipsychotic indicated for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and as an adjunct therapy for depression. It is believed to work as an agonist of receptors in the brain. Medical studies pointed to the fact that it may exhibit combined agonist activity on both the 5-HT1A and D2 dopamine receptors, while also functioning as an antagonist on other receptors.

Most medical experts agree that there is a link between disturbed neurotransmitter activity (dopamine in particular) and psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. Disturbed dopamine activity can trigger psychotic symptoms which may include aggression, hostile behaviour and hallucinations (these are referred to as positive symptoms). Negative symptoms (emotional and social disruption) can also occur, and this may be related to the underactivity of dopamine in certain areas of the brain.

This medicine can treat both the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia, which can help to improve concentration and reduce the symptoms of schizophrenia. When used for bipolar disorder, it is normally given in cases when antidepressant medicine on its own fails to fully control and treat the symptoms. Other conditions not listed here have also been treated with this medicine.

Dosage and Administration
Abilify (Aripiprazole) is provided as 10mg strength tablets for administration by mouth. The required daily dosage will depend on the condition being treated and the patient's individual circumstances. Adults treating schizophrenia may be told by their doctor to start out on 10mg to 15mg per day. Although the maintenance dosage may vary from 10mg to 30mg per day, medical research demonstrated that doses in excess of 10mg or 15mg per day were not more effective than administering 10mg or 15mg each day. However, the exact dosage required will usually differ from patient to patient, and it is essential to closely follow the instructions of the doctor in charge of treatment.

Side effects
Patients who are being treated with Abilify (Aripiprazole) may experience side effects, such as:

  • Vertigo
  • Arm or limb pain
  • Blurring of vision
  • An increase in weight
  • Salivation and drooling

You must keep your doctor informed of all side effects that occur. You will be required to get medical help straight away if you are affected by any serious reactions, including high fever, stiff or rigid muscles, body movements which you have no control over, eyesight disturbances, speech problems and any other severe reactions that have not been listed in this paragraph.

Precautions
This medicine is not considered a suitable treatment for treating dementia in older patients due to the serious risks this may pose.

Sudden changes to your mood and behaviour could occur at any time during treatment. Regular monitoring of your progress will be required by your doctor. Seek treatment straight away if you suffer from any serious changes in mood or suicidal thoughts.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Abilify (Aripiprazole) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
