Uses
Estradot (Oestradiol) transdermal patches are indicated for HRT (hormonal replacement therapy). They work by delivering a controlled amount of the female hormone oestradiol into the veins so as to compensate for the drop in oestrogen production caused by the menopause. As a result of this, symptoms of oestrogen deficiency including vaginal atrophy, sweating at night and hot flushes can be relieved.

Another indication for these patches is the prevention of bone thinning (osteoporosis) in menopausal women. The drop in oestrogen can sometimes have a thinning effect on the bones, leading to an increased fracture risk. Although not used as a first line therapy for this purpose, doctors may recommend it in cases where other forms of treatment are not effective or well tolerated by the patient.

Dosage and Administration
Estradot (Oestradiol) is administered by means of affixing it to the skin on the abdomen (but never on the breasts). These patches generally release 50mcg of the active ingredient into the bloodstream each day. Doctors generally tell patients to start treatment with the lowest possible dosage, and it is possible that the use of a lower strength patch may be recommended at first.

With regard to the frequency of application, these patches are used on a continuous basis, meaning that doctors tell patients to replace it every 3 or 4 days. Never use 2 patches at the same time, and ensure that a new area of skin is chosen when the patch is being replaced. Continuous medical assessment and examinations will be carried out by your doctor to determine whether or not the continuation of treatment is necessary.

Side effects
Side effects of Estradot (Oestradiol) may include:

  • Sore breasts
  • Libido changes
  • Vaginal redness or pruritis
  • A discharge from the vagina
  • Skin colour changes on the face

Your doctor must be notified if any side effects are experienced during treatment. In the event of a serious reaction or dangerous side effects, medical treatment will be needed without delay. Immediately see your doctor if you notice a lump occurring on the breast, visual problems, difficulty balancing, weak muscles, blisters on the skin or any other severe reactions that have not been mentioned here.

Precautions
Medical experts have stated that combined HRT is not suitable for period of longer than 3 to 4 years. In some cases, a shorter period of treatment may be safer. Doctors normally advise patients to use the lowest possible dosage for the shortest period of time.

Patients treating osteoporosis may be provided with other instructions on how to help their condition, some of which may include dietary advice.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Estradot (Oestradiol) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
