Uses
Hiprex (Hexamine Hippurate) (also referred to as methenamine hippurate) is a medicine which is prescribed to treat or prevent urinary tract infections. It kills bacteria present in the urinary tract. If the urinary tract is infected, an acidic environment is created by the bacteria, which aids the multiplication of the bacteria. When this medicine is taken, it is passed into the urine. The acidic urine causes the release of a chemical known as formaldehyde, which destroys the bacteria, thereby treating the infection. It is important to note that in order for this medicine to work, the urine must be acidic.

Dosage and Administration
Patients who have been prescribed Hiprex (Hexamine Hippurate) must strictly adhere to all instructions provided by the doctor who prescribed the medicine. Patients treating cystitis are usually told by their doctor to take 1g by mouth, twice per day, for a period of 5 to 7 days. In some cases, this medicine may be prescribed for cystitis prophylaxis. Ask your doctor for more details about this.
