Main Use Active Ingredient Marketed Name
Herpes infections Aciclovir Lovir

Uses
Lovir (Aciclovir) is categorized as a nucleoside analogue. It exhibits antiviral action and is used for herpes simplex infection (HSV-1 and HSV-2). Other uses include chicken pox (varicella zoster) and herpes zoster (also known as shingles). When activated inside the body, this medicine is first converted into a form known as acyclovir monophosphate, and then into acyclovir triphosphate. This form has potent inhibitory properties against the viral DNA polymerases (enzymes responsible for the production of DNA molecules).

These DNA polymerases are required for the virus to copy its DNA, a vital step in viral replication. Inhibition of the polymerases helps to prevent the reproduction of the virus and the further infection of cells. Although treatment cannot cure the virus, it does allow the immune system to bring the symptoms under control, allowing for a reduction in pain while also helping with the healing process of sores and blisters related to the virus. Some patients have also been treated for eczema herpeticum with this medicine.

Dosage and Administration
Lovir (Aciclovir) comes as 800mg strength tablets for administration via the oral route. The dosage will vary based on individual factors, which may include whether the medicine is being used to treat an infection or to prevent herpes infections, and the functioning of the immune system. Adults treating herpes simplex infections may be required to continue treatment for a 5 day period, whereas shingles may require a 7 day treatment period. Only take the amount of medicine that your doctor directs you to take and never exceed the recommended dosage.
