Uses
Nilstat Vaginal Cream (Nystatin) is indicated for vaginal thrush (sometimes called candidiasis). The active ingredient is a type of polyene antifungal that is active against a wide range of fungi and yeast, including the fungus that can cause thrush (Candida). Its antifungal properties are derived from its ability to attach itself to the sterols present in the cell membrane, causing it to become damaged. This triggers the leakage of the cell's components, resulting in the destruction of the fungi.

However, it does not have any anti-bacterial activity. Vaginal yeast infections are a common occurrence in women, and factors such as pregnancy, diabetes or medical treatment could increase the risk. Symptoms include vaginal itching and a burning sensation. A white discharge from the vagina is also possible. Even though the condition can cause discomfort, it is generally not severe. By acting in the vagina to destroy the fungi responsible for causing the infection, this medicine allows for the symptoms to be treated.

Dosage and Administration
Nilstat Vaginal Cream (Nystatin) is provided in a tube alongside an applicator. If your doctor diagnoses the infection as being caused by fungi susceptible to the active ingredient in the cream, you may be provided with a dosage schedule. Adult patients are sometimes instructed to administer 1 applicator (containing roughly 5g of cream) directly into the vagina, 1 to 2 times per day.

Your doctor will decide the length of treatment, which normally lasts for two weeks, but some patients may be required to use it for longer to this. If you do not notice any improvement in your symptoms after 3 days of use, consult a doctor. Ensure that you are fully aware of how to properly use the applicator. Ask your doctor if there is any part of the application procedure which you are not sure of. The applicator must be washed using a mild soap and water following each time you use it.

Side effects
Application of Nilstat Vaginal Cream (Nystatin) might lead to some patients experiencing side effects, such as irritation of the vagina. Although it is usually well tolerated, there is a risk of serious side effects, however, this is considered to be less likely. Seek medical treatment immediately if this happens.

Precautions
Even though some degree of relief may occur after a few days of use, it is important to keep using it until the full course has been finished (unless the patient is told to stop treatment by a doctor). This is to prevent the infection returning.

This cream is to be used in the vagina as directed by the doctor. It must never be ingested.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Nilstat Vaginal Cream (Nystatin) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you suffer from any allergies.
