Uses
Premarin (Conjugated Estrogen) is indicated for menopausal symptoms and the prevention of osteoporosis due to the menopause. Women suffering from medical disorders in which the amount of oestrogen in the body is lacking may also be treated with this medicine. In some cases, it has been used for treating certain types of cancer in men or women. These tablets are produced using a mixture of various oestrogens which have been obtained using natural sources. Oestrogen is an important female sex hormone which plays a vital role in the female reproductive system.

It also contributes to secondary sexual characteristics. During the menstrual cycle, it is secreted by the ovaries. However, as the menopause approaches, the production of oestrogen gradually slows down, leading to a decline in the amount circulating in the body. This can produce unpleasant symptoms, which may include vaginal dryness, itchiness, hot flushes and other symptoms. In order to alleviate these symptoms, your doctor may recommend hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with this medicine, which works by acting as a supplement to the body`s oestrogen levels.

Dosage and Administration
Premarin (Conjugated Estrogen) is provided as 0.625mg strength tablets which need to be administered in accordance with the dosing schedule that your doctor determines for you. It is possible for patients to administer the medicine without regard to meals. The dosage will differ depending on the condition for which it is being administered. Usually, if vaginal atrophy is being treated, your doctor will direct you to start out with the lowest possible effective dose (usually 0.3mg).

If this is the case, lower strength tablets will be needed. The doctor may decide to adjust the daily dosage based on how the patient responds to treatment. Women treating hypoestrogenism may be told to take 0.3mg or else 0.625mg per day, given on a cyclic basis (this means that it is taken for 3 weeks followed by a 1 week off period). Always follow the instructions given by your doctor.
