Uses
Hepcinat (Sofosbuvir) is given in combination with antiviral drugs as a treatment for chronic Hepatitis C infections. It works by directly targeting the virus and preventing viral replication. Successful treatment could even lead to a cure from hep C. When taken, the medicine is metabolized into its active form triphosphate GS-461203. Following this, it starts to work by blocking the action of a type of enzyme known as NS5B-RNA dependent RNA polymerase.

The virus is dependent on this enzyme in order to continue multiplying, and by blocking its action, the replication of the virus can be stopped. As a direct result of this, the volume of hepatitis C present in the liver is significantly reduced, which helps boost the function of the liver while also reducing the occurrence of liver damage. When used alongside with other medicines (ribavirin or peginterferon alfa), it has a high cure rate.

Dosage and Administration
Hepcinat (Sofosbuvir) is not used on its own. Instead, it is given in combination with other medicines. As there are different genotypes of the Hepatitis C virus, the required duration of treatment as well as the other medications required will vary from patient to patient. In general, patients will be instructed to take 1 tablet (containing 400mg of the main ingredient) per day.

Patients treating a chronic genotype 1 or 4 hepatitis C infection may be told by their doctor to take it for 12 weeks in combination with peg-interferon alfa and ribavirin. HCV genotype 2 is also treated for 12 weeks, however, it is combined with ribavirin. Treatment of genotype 3 usually requires 24 weeks combination treatment, and it is taken alongside ribavirin. In all cases, your doctor will decide the dosage of the medicine that sofosbuvir is to be taken in combination with.

Side effects
During the course of treatment with Hepcinat (Sofosbuvir) tablets, some side effects may occur:

  • Headache
  • Sleep disruption
  • A reduction in appetite
  • A slightly itchy sensation
  • Feeling fatigued or exhausted

There is also the possibility of patients suffering from other reactions. Should you suffer from swelling that affects the gums, sores that occur in the mouth or skin, coughing, unusual behaviour, pale discolouration of skin or any other serious side effects, consult your doctor immediately.

Precautions
This medication should not be used on its own (monotherapy) to treat a hepatitis C infection, as doing so could cause the virus to become resistant, resulting in further complications. Ensure that you use it exactly as directed by your doctor, together with the other required hepatitis C medicines.

Patients should note that it is still possible to transmit the virus to others, even if this medicine is being taken. Safe sex should be practiced, and all steps should be taken to protect those around you from infection via body fluids. Also, pregnant women should never take this medicine as it could cause birth defects.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Hepcinat (Sofosbuvir) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
