Main Use Active Ingredient Marketed Name
Vitiligo Monobenzone Benoquin Cream

Uses
Benoquin Cream (Monobenzone) is used as a vitiligo treatment. It acts as a dipigmenting agent, and helps to whiten or lighten darker areas of skin affected by vitiligo, so as to help make the colour of the skin even. By helping to decrease the amount of pigment molecules (also called melanin) excreted from the melanocytes (cells that produce pigments), this medicine can permanently lighten the skin. However, it is not suitable for other skin conditions that cause discolouration.

Dosage and Administration
Benoquin Cream (Monobenzone) is to be applied topically to the skin. During treatment, a doctor or dermatologist will supervise and monitor you, to ensure that it is being used safely, and to help make sure that treatment is effective. Adults are sometimes instructed to apply a thin layer of the skin whitening cream to the pigmented areas of skin, 2 to 3 times a day. Generally speaking, 4 months of treatment may be required for the depigmentation process to be finished. You should notify your doctor if no improvement in your symptoms is noticed after you have been using the lightening cream for 1 month.

Side effects
Treatment with Benoquin Cream (Monobenzone) may result in some side effects, including:

  • Dry skin
  • Flaky skin
  • Skin cracking
  • Mild itchiness
  • Irritation of the skin

Inform your doctor of any side effects that occur during treatment. If you experience severe itchiness, extreme inflammation of the skin, serious irritation or any other severe side effects, see your doctor immediately.

Precautions
This cream should never be used to treat freckles, sun spots, age spots, melanoma, skin discolouration caused by skin trauma or any skin discolouration problems not caused by vitiligo, as it is not a cosmetic bleach, and will permanently discolour the skin.

After application, the skin will be sensitive to sunlight, and patients must avoid any unnecessary exposure to the sun.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Benoquin Cream (Monobenzone) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
  • If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
