Helping people stop smoking Varenicline Champix

Uses
Champix (Varenicline) tablets are used to help those who smoke successfully quit. Nicotine is present in cigarettes, and is addictive. Smokers may experience withdrawal symptoms when they try to stop smoking, and may feel the need to smoke in order to relieve the craving. The active ingredient in this medicine belongs to a class of medicines referred to as nicotinic acetylcholine receptor partial agonists, and it helps to prevent and relieve withdrawal symptoms, while also blocking the action of nicotine.

Dosage and Administration
Patients who wish to quit smoking should be aware that treatment with Champix (Varenicline) tablets must also be combined with counselling and support therapy. This is because stopping smoking can be difficult, and behaviour modification may also be needed. These tablets contain 1mg of the active component. As the medicine does not begin to take effect immediately, patients are usually told by their doctor to start treatment 1 to 2 weeks prior to quitting smoking. The exact dosage and treatment period will be decided by the doctor providing treatment, and patients must follow all instructions given to them.

Side effects
Patients taking Champix (Varenicline) as part of their treatment to stop cigarette smoking may experience some side effects, such as:

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Bad taste in mouth
  • Changes in appetite
  • Decreased sleep quality

While you are taking this medicine to help you give up smoking, you should inform your doctor about any side effects that occur. If any symptoms of a severe reaction occur, seek medical attention immediately.

Precautions
If any severe mood changes occur, such as aggression, hyperactivity or anxiety, stop treatment and immediately see your doctor.

Your doctor may need to gradually reduce your dosage when stopping treatment, instead of telling you to abruptly stop taking the medicine.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Champix (Varenicline) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
  • If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
  • If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
  • If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
