Uses
Decapeptyl (Triptorelin) is used as a fertility treatment for women to help with ART (assisted reproduction techniques). This medicine helps to prevent premature ovulation (release of egg cells), so as to increase the chances of pregnancy. Its active ingredient is a gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, that blocks the action of a natural hormone known as GnRH, resulting in reduced luteinising hormone and follicle stimulating hormone levels, thereby stopping ovulation from occurring too early.
The same active ingredient in this medicine is also available in different strengths to this product, however, this is because it has other applications. These include lowering testosterone levels in adult men affected by prostate cancer, so as to slow down the development of the cancer and treat symptoms associated with this condition. It has also been used to reduce oestrogen levels in women affected by endometriosis (a condition in which oestrogen stimulates the growth of endometrium in the body) and to help treat fibroids.
Dosage and Administration
Decapeptyl (Triptorelin) comes in the form of syringes, which are ready for use immediately. This particular product is a 0.1mg strength formula. However, patients should not administer the injection themselves. Instead, a doctor or healthcare professional will administer the subcutaneous injection in a clinic or medical facility. Women being treated with this medicine to help them become pregnant may be given the injection once per day by their doctor until the follicles have grown sufficiently (usually 4 to 7 weeks).
Treatment generally commences on the second or third day of the menstrual cycle, or as an alternative, on day 21 to 23. Other hormones may also be administered by the doctor after 2 to 4 weeks of treatment. Follow all instructions given by your doctor, and remember that you will be carefully monitored by your doctor during treatment.
