Main Use Active Ingredient Marketed Name
Hyperpigmented skin Glycolic Acid, Arbutin, Kojic Acid Demelan Cream

Uses
Demelan Cream (Glycolic Acid/Arbutin/Kojic Acid) is a combination of 3 different ingredients which is indicated for the treatment of hyperpigmentation (melasma). One of the ingredients (arbutin) is a skin brightening agent that is derived from the leaves of shrubs such as mulberry, cranberry or bearberry. It can inhibit the production of melanin (a natural pigment), and is considered to have a higher level of tolerability than ingredients used in other products prescribed to treat hyperpigmentation symptoms such as dark patches that appear on the face.

This cream also contains kojic acid, which occurs as a by-product of fermented malting rice used to make rice wine. It has also been found to inhibit the body's production of melanin. The other ingredient in this cream is called glycolic acid, and it helps with skin exfoliation, thereby helping with the removal of unhealthy and hyperpigmented skin cells. Studies have been conducted which suggest that it may also have benefits related to inhibiting melanin production.

Dosage and Administration
If you are using Demelan Cream (Glycolic Acid/Arbutin/Kojic Acid) to treat melasma, application instructions will be given to you by your doctor. Adults are sometimes instructed by a doctor or dermatologist to apply the cream every second day during the first week of treatment. It is best if small amounts of the cream are applied, and you may also be instructed to apply it after you clean your skin in the evening.

It is very important that unnecessary exposure to the sun is avoided during treatment. Generally speaking, patients should notice the positive effects of the cream after 3 to 4 weeks of treatment. Treatment is usually stopped when the area of skin affected by hyperpigmentation becomes the same colour as the rest of the skin. The maximum period of treatment that doctors prescribe is 6 weeks, as excessive use can cause hypopigmentation.

Side effects
It is possible that some patients with melasma caused by medication, sun exposure or other conditions who use Demelan Cream (Glycolic Acid/Arbutin/Kojic Acid) may experience skin irritation or other side effects. Tell your doctor if this happens, and seek emergency medical attention if any severe reactions occur.

Precautions
Patients should avoid the sun whenever possible, as this is essential for the melasma to be effectively treated. If you go outdoors, sunscreen should be applied. Doctors generally recommend using SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. You should also wear protective clothing when going out.

Your doctor may tell you that sunscreen which contains zinc oxide and titanium oxide is more effective than those with chemical blockers.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Demelan Cream (Glycolic Acid/Arbutin/Kojic Acid) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
