Uses
Doxine (Doxycycline Hyclate) is a type of tetracycline antibiotic medication which has been synthesized from oxytetracycline. It works by attaching itself to the 30S ribosomal subunit, the part of the bacteria responsible for synthesizing protein. The result of this is that the bacteria are unable to produce protein, and without this, they can no longer multiply. Any leftover microorganisms are eventually destroyed. As it has a broad spectrum against gram-positive and negative bacteria (as well as other types of microorganisms), it is used for many purposes, including the treatment of acne, syphilis, gonorrhoea, urinary tract infections, granuloma inguinale, chlamydia, bronchitis and other bacterial infections. Patients have also taken it for malaria prophylaxis.
Dosage and Administration
Doxine (Doxycycline Hyclate) is provided as film coated tablets containing 100mg of the active ingredient. The dosage must be individualised so as to provide the most effective response to the particular condition that requires treatment. Adults treating acne may be told to take 100mg by mouth, twice per day and the doctor may advise to continue treatment for a period lasting 3 to 6 weeks (or until the symptoms improve). Malaria prophylaxis requires treatment to commence 1 to 2 days before travel. Patients may be told to continue administration of the medicine for the entire duration of the trip, as well as for 4 weeks after returning. Never take more than your doctor tells you to take.
Side effects
Administration of Doxine (Doxycycline Hyclate) could result in side effects, including:
Ensure that the doctor in charge of medical treatment is made aware of any bothersome side effects. Certain side effects which are of a serious nature will require that the patient present themselves at a hospital or doctor's surgery for medical care as soon as possible. Examples of this include bloody diarrhoea, skin peeling and blistering, a noticeable reduction in the frequency of urination, visual changes, severe fatigue and other potential reactions which are not listed here.
Precautions
This medicine can cause photosensitivity of the skin. Patients should avoid skin exposure to the sun whenever possible.
Keep taking the medicine for the full course of treatment unless your doctor tells you to stop. Stopping treatment too soon could cause the infection to come back, even if the symptoms have appeared to improve.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Doxine (Doxycycline Hyclate) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
