Uses
Ebixa (Memantine) is prescribed as a treatment for dementia that is moderate to severe, when the dementia is related to Alzheimer's disease. This medicine may help to improve the functioning of the brain. It belongs to a class of drugs referred to as NMDA receptor antagonists, and its method of action involves reducing abnormal brain activity, and in particular, unusual brain activity caused by a chemical called glutamate.

Recently, there have been medical studies conducted which explored other potential uses for this drug, and its possible effects when used to treat conditions such as Tourette's syndrome, OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), anxiety, migraine, bipolar disorder, as well as other conditions.

Dosage and Administration
Ebixa (Memantine) comes in the form of 10mg tablets, which must be taken in strict accordance with the instructions provided by the prescribing doctor. Adults treating Alzheimer's disease are sometimes told to take 5mg per day, which may then be titrated upwards once every week, in increments of 5mg. The maintenance dose generally ranges from 5mg once per day to 10mg twice per day, and the maximum dose is 20mg per day. However, because every patient will have different dosage requirements, it is essential that the instructions of the prescribing doctor are strictly adhered to.

Side effects
If you take Ebixa (Memantine) tablets, some side effects may occur, such as:

• Cough
• Body pain
• Weight loss
• Increased urination
• Aggressive behaviour or anxiety

It is recommended that the prescribing doctor is notified if any side effects become bothersome. In rare cases, serious reactions that will require immediate medical care may occur, such as hallucinations, seizures, coordination problems, pale skin, pancreatitis and other serious side effects which have not been listed here.

Precautions
This medication is generally only prescribed if there is a caregiver present who will ensure that the patient regularly takes the medication.

Certain dietary changes may affect the removal of the active ingredient from the body, and should be avoided.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Ebixa (Memantine) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• If you suffer from any allergies.
• If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
