Thyroid hormone problems Levothyroxine Sodium Eltroxin

Uses
Eltroxin (Levothyroxine Sodium) is a thyroid hormone (sometimes called T4) in a synthetic form. It is used as a treatment for patients with an underactive thyroid gland. This means that sufficient amounts of thyroxine are not being produced (underactive thyroid), and as a result of this, these tablets must be taken as a substitute for the deficiency of thyroid hormone levels.

In the body, the thyroid hormone is responsible for controlling functions related to metabolism and growth. Insufficient levels of this hormone can lead to fatigue, increased body weight and sensitivity to cold temperatures. Taking this drug helps to normalise the levels of tri-iodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), thereby relieving the symptoms listed here. Other uses include treating thyroid cancer and preventing goiters.

Dosage and Administration
Eltroxin (Levothyroxine Sodium) tablets each contain 100mcg of the active component. Adult patients who are undergoing treatment for hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid gland) are sometimes told to start out treatment with a dosage ranging from 12.5mcg to 50mcg per day.

The doctor providing treatment may then increase the patient's dosage at 12.5mcg to 25mcg per day increments. Adjustments usually take place every 2 to 4 weeks. However, patients who have a history of suffering from cardiovascular disease may have their dosage increased at 3 to 6 week intervals. If used for TSH suppression, or any other conditions, the dosage required is different, and patients must strictly follow the instructions of their doctor.

Side effects
Using Eltroxin (Levothyroxine Sodium) as a replacement for low levels of thyroid hormones may cause some side effects, such as:

  • Perspiration
  • Cramps in the muscles
  • Hair loss which is temporary
  • Tremors which may affect the hands
  • Difficulty tolerating hot temperatures

Your doctor will keep in regular contact with you during treatment, and it is important to report any side effects. Seek medical care immediately if you experience pain in the chest or any other symptoms of a serious reaction.

Precautions
Under no circumstances should these tablets be taken for the purposes of weight loss, as this could result in serious side effects.

If you are currently affected by or have a history of suffering from hepatitis, diseases of the kidneys, cardiovascular disease, angina, arrhythmias, atherosclerosis, a heart attack, problems affecting the pituitary adrenal gland or an underactive pituitary gland, you must tell your doctor before taking this medicine.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Eltroxin (Levothyroxine Sodium) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
