Hair loss in men and prostate enlargement | Finasteride | Finast |
Uses
Finast (Finasteride) is indicated for BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia), a condition which causes frequent urination or weak urine streams due to the prostate becoming enlarged. Doctors also prescribe it in lower doses as a male pattern hair loss treatment, as it has been shown in medical trials to stop balding and increase new hair growth. It achieves this by preventing a hormone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone) from being formed. This hormone contributes to hair loss. This drug can also shrink an enlarged prostate, providing relief from BPH symptoms.
Dosage and Administration
Finast (Finasteride) tablets are administered orally. However, a thorough medical examination will be required, so that a suitable dosage can be prescribed. Adults treating an enlarged prostate are usually told that the dosage for BPH is 5mg per day (equal to one tablet). When treating male pattern baldness, the dosage prescribed by doctors is 1mg per day. As these tablets come in a 5mg strength, one tablet per day is not a suitable dosage for hair loss, and patients should only take the dosage that their doctor prescribes to them.
Side effects
Taking Finast (Finasteride) can sometimes cause patients to experience side effects, such as:
Side effects should be reported to the prescribing doctor. If you notice lumps on the breast, sore breasts, or a nipple discharge, see your doctor immediately.

This drug is only prescribed for adult men, and never to women or children. Pregnant women should never touch the tablets, especially if they are cut or broken, as there is a chance that the medicine may be absorbed into the blood through the skin, which could cause harm to the unborn baby.
In rare cases, this medicine has been associated with male breast cancer.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Finast (Finasteride) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
