Uses
Levoquin (Levofloxacin) is used to treat community-acquired pneumonia, urinary tract infections, pyleonephritis (bacterial kidney infection), cystitis, prostatits, skin infections and many other types of bacterial infections. However, it will not work on viral infections. This drug belongs to a class of medicines known as quinolone antibiotics, and it treats infections by destroying bacteria. By preventing the action of an enzyme called DNA-gyrase (which is needed by the bacteria to repair genetic material), this drug effectively treats a wide range of infections caused by bacteria.
Dosage and Administration
Patients must visit their doctor before taking Levoquin (Levofloxacin), so that a thorough medical examination can be conducted. The prescribing doctor will then determine the most effective dosage, based on the condition being treated. Adult patients undergoing treatment for community acquired pneumonia are usually told to take 500mg every 24 hours, and treatment can last for 7 to 14 days. Prostatitis is often treated with a dose of 500mg per day, with treatment lasting for as long as 28 days. Other conditions are treated with different dosage regimens, and patients must strictly follow the instructions provided by their doctor.
Side effects
Patients treating bacterial infections with Levoquin (Levofloxacin) may sometimes experience side effects. A list of possible reactions is provided here:

Tendinitis or tendon ruptures may be more likely as a result of taking this drug. This may occur while you are taking the medicine, or after treatment. Ask your doctor about the risk of this before you start treatment.
Patients with myasthenia gravis should not take this medicine, as it may worsen the condition or cause other serious symptoms.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Levoquin (Levofloxacin) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
