Uses
Metformin (Metformin Hydrochloride) is used for its antihyperglycaemic properties. It works by reducing glucose levels in diabetic patients. This medicine belongs to the biguanide class of antidiabetic medicines, and is commonly used as a first line treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes, especially those who are overweight. In some cases, doctors have treated patients affected by polycystic ovary syndrome with it.

The way in which this medication acts differs from other types of drugs used to treat diabetes. Its mechanism of action is said to be triggering an increase in the uptake and use of peripheral glucose, so as to improve the body`s sensitivity to glucose. In addition to this, it can also reduce the production of glucose by the liver and the amount of glucose absorbed in the intestines. This helps to improve overall control of sugar levels in those affected by diabetes.

Dosage and Administration
Metformin (Metformin Hydrochloride) 500mg tablets are administered by mouth. Your doctor will assess the treatment requirement when determining the right dosage. Adults treating diabetes might be told by their doctor to take 500mg by mouth, twice per day (one tablet administered with the morning meal and another one in the evening, alongside dinner). However, the exact dosage may differ based on individual circumstances and patients will be required to follow the instructions of their doctor.

Side effects
Use of Metformin (Metformin Hydrochloride) might cause side effects, such as:

All patients should inform their doctor of any side effects that occur while taking this medicine. Precautions
In rare cases, a severe metabolic problem called lactic acidosis can occur in patients treated with this medicine. This is due to the accumulation of the medicine inside the body. Immediate hospitalization will be needed if this condition occurs.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
