Uses
MyHep (Sofosbuvir) is prescribed to adults who have contracted chronic hepatitis C in genotype 1, 2, 3 or 4. It needs to be taken with Ribavirin and Pegylated interferon (genotypes 1 and 4 only). Sofosbuvir can be taken by patients awaiting liver transplantation, and by patients with HCV/HIV-1 co-infection.
Sofosbuvir works by preventing the Hepatitis C virus from replicating.
Dosage and Administration
MyHep is usually prescribed at a strating dose of 400mg (one tablet) each day, but your doctor may prescribe a different dose depending on your specific condition. Tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. You can take sofosbuvir with or without food. Sofosbuvir must be used as part of a combination treatment as detailed below.
Depending on progress, your doctor may adjust your dosage during treatment.
Side effects
Some mild side effects when taking MyHep are common. The following are know side effects but are usually temporary and mild. Contact your doctor if they become troublesome.
Some side effects can be more serious such as severe diarrhea, changes to your heart rate, or breathing difficulties . If you notice these, or have any unusual side effects or problems, you should contact your doctor immediately.
Precautions
Do not take MyHep (Sofosbuvir) by itself. It should only be taken in combination with ribavarin and/or pegylated interferon depending on the genotype of hepatitis C.
Using MyHep (Sofosbuvir) while pregnant is contraindicated. It can harm your unborn baby. MyHep (Sofosbuvir), Ribavirin and Pegylated interferon can cause serious birth defects. If you are not pregnant, you must use contraception duing treatment and for 6 months after stopping treatment. If a pregnancy occurs to mother, while either partners are using these medicines, tell your doctor right away.
Your doctor may ask you to have a pregnancy test before you start using this medicine. You must have a negative pregnancy test before you will be allowed to use this medicine with ribavirin.
Tell your doctor if you are on any other drugs (prescription non-prescription), herbal treatments or nutritional supplements. Tell your doctor if you are breast feeding.
