Uses
Omeprazole Actavis (Omeprazole) works by affecting proton pumps in the stomach. It is indicated for a number of conditions related to digestion and stomach pain, including dyspepsia, laryngopharyngeal reflux, peptic ulcers, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), duodenal or other ulcers occurring as a result of NSAID treatment (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, medicines used in the treatment of pain which can cause side effects occurring in the stomach), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other related conditions.
When used to treat peptic ulcers, it is used in combination with other medicines, so as to ensure that Helicobacter pylori (a type of gram negative bacteria that occurs in the stomach) is removed. Patients have also used it as a maintenance treatment for some of the conditions listed above. This medicine aims to treat the conditions listed here by causing a decrease in the amount of acid that the stomach produces. It achieves this by blocking the action of the proton pumps, thereby leading to a significant reduction in the secretion of stomach acid.
Dosage and Administration
Omeprazole Actavis (Omeprazole) is used for a wide range of conditions. The medicine comes as 10mg modified release capsules for oral administration. Dosage is depending on the condition being treated and the patient`s symptoms. Adults affected by gastroduodenal lesions related to NSAIDs may be instructed to administer 20mg per day. The majority of patients will be treated in 4 weeks, however if a full recovery has not occurred, the doctor may recommend another 4 weeks of treatment. Dyspepsia is sometimes treated with 20mg, administered once per day for a period of 14 to 28 days. However, certain patients may respond to a dosage of 10mg per day. In all cases, deciding the correct dosage will be the responsibility of the doctor providing treatment.
