Stomach ulcers | Pantoprazole Sodium Sesquihydrate | Pantoprazole |
Uses
Pantoprazole (Pantoprazole Sodium Sesquihydrate) acts directly on the proton pumps and helps to prevent hydrochloric acid from being secreted in the stomach. It has a wide range of medical uses, including treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and stomach ulcers (duodenal and gastric). It may also be combined with antibiotics so as to eradicate helicobacter pylori (a type of gram-negative bacteria that occurs in the stomach which has been linked to the formation of ulcers).
When this medicine is absorbed, conversion into the active form occurs in the parietal cells of the stomach. It is then able to block the last step in stomach acid production, which results in a significant reduction in acid secretion. This allows ulcers the opportunity to heal, and can also protect the stomach against further damage. It also helps to relieve some of the other symptoms associated with these conditions.
Dosage and Administration
Pantoprazole (Pantoprazole Sodium Sesquihydrate) is provided as 20mg strength enteric coated tablets for administration by mouth. Adults being treated for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease which is mild in nature may be advised by their doctor to take 20mg per day. The symptoms should be controlled after 2 to 4 weeks of treatment, however, if they persist beyond this, your doctor may require further medical tests or alternative forms of treatment.
