Uses
Patanol Eye Drops (Olopatadine) is an antiallergic medicine which treats seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (hay fever of the eyes) by inhibiting the release of histamine. The active ingredient contained in this ophthalmic solution is known as a selective histamine H1 antagonist. Histamine is released by the mast cells as part of the body's response to irritants or allergens in the air (such as pollen or dust). Following this, it forms a bond with the H1 receptors, which triggers the flow of blood to the affected area.
If the eyes are affected, they may become red and itchy. Patients may even experience watery eyes. These symptoms can be managed with these eye drops, as they can help to inhibit the histamine receptors present in the eyes. Other inflammatory lipid mediators are also inhibited, including thromboxane and leukotriene. This helps to further the anti-inflammatory benefits of this ophthalmic solution. Patients have also been used this product for perennial allergic conjunctivitis.
Dosage and Administration
Patanol Eye Drops (Olopatadine) comes in a 0.1 per cent strength solution, meaning that each 1ml of the solution contains 1mg of medicine. Your doctor will examine your eyes and inform you of the correct dosage administration. In some cases, adult patients undergoing treatment for seasonal allergic conjunctivitis have been instructed by their doctor to administer one drop into the eye (or both eyes if needed), twice per day. Allow a 6 to 8 hour break in between each administration. Do not apply more than your doctor tells you to.
