Uses
Protopic Ointment (Tacrolimus Monohydrate) is applied to the skin as a treatment for eczema (also called atopic dermatitis). It belongs to a group of medications called calcineurin inhibitors, and its mode of action involves reducing the activity of the immune system, and preventing the production of substances which cause eczema.
This helps to provide relief from itchiness, redness and scaly rashes which occur as a result of eczema. Doctors prescribe it as a short term treatment for eczema, and it may also be used intermittently on a long term basis to help manage this condition. Recently, some patients have used it to treat vitiligo.
Dosage and Administration
Protopic Ointment (Tacrolimus Monohydrate) needs to be applied exactly as your doctor tells you. This ointment should be applied to areas of skin affected by eczema, and it is generally only used for short periods of time. In some cases, patients may be told to repeat treatment, while taking breaks in between treatment periods. It is likely that your doctor will tell you to apply the least amount of ointment possible required to control your symptoms, and you will also be told to avoid swimming or bathing right after applying the ointment, so as to prevent washing it off.
