Uses
Ridaura (Auranofin) is used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Its active ingredient is a type of gold complex which works by acting on the immune system. Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease which can gradually progress and worsen over time. Symptoms include soreness and swelling of the joints in the feet, neck, hands and elsewhere in the body. It is also possible that nodules (types of bumps) may appear on the body, and this may even be accompanied by fatigue. Although the exact causes of this disease are not fully understood, it is widely believed that the joint inflammation is related to the immune system.
This medicine functions as a DMARD (disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug), and doctors often use it to treat patients who have failed to respond to other medicines used for arthritis. Experts have stated that it works by suppressing and reducing the immune system. Treatment helps to slow down the progress of the disease, while also reducing joint inflammation and pain. Although it can lessen some forms of disease activity, it will not reverse or repair any previous joint or cartilage damage.
Dosage and Administration
Ridaura (Auranofin) tablets are to be taken by mouth in exact accordance with the instructions given by your doctor. Adult patients are generally advised by their doctor to take 3mg (one tablet) twice per day, for a total daily dose of 6mg. Patients may need to take it for 3 to 6 months before it begins to fully work. If a sufficient response has not been noticed after 6 months, the doctor may increase the daily dosage to 9mg (3mg administered 3 times). The doctor may advise continuing on this dosage for 3 months, however if an adequate response is not noticed after this, treatment will be stopped. Always follow the instructions of your doctor.
