Uses
Spiractin (Spironolactone) is a diuretic medicine. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting excess salt and water absorption by the body and contributing to the removal of unnecessary fluids. Doctors use it to treat patients affected by high blood pressure, cirrhosis of the liver, malignant ascites, nephrotic syndrome, primary hypearldosteronism and fluid retention in patients with CHF (congestive heart failure).
Because this medicine is a potassium sparing diuretic, it may be used to treat patients for low potassium levels in the blood (hypokalaemia). When administered, it competitively binds to the aldosterone receptor and prevents aldosterone from acting on the kidneys. Resulting from this, more water and salt are released as urine, which helps to reverse the symptoms of oedema. Another indication for this drug is hirsutism in women (a condition which causes abnormal and unwanted hair growth).
Dosage and Administration
Spiractin (Spironolactone) is provided in tablet form and the medicine content of each one is 100mg. Careful consideration will be required when your doctor is deciding on the appropriate dosage, and factors to be considered include the condition in need of treatment and the patient`s current and past health. In some cases, adults undergoing treatment for primary hyperaldosteronism have been instructed to take 100mg per day. Titration to the dosage may be ordered by the doctor depending on the clinical response. High blood pressure, hirsutism, congestive heart failure or any other condition being treated may require changes to the dosage regimen. Always follow the instructions given by the doctor.
