Uses
Univent Nasal Spray (Ipratropium) is an anticholinergic medicine used to relieve rhinorrhoea (runny nose) related to hay fever or other forms of allergies. It works by inhibiting the acetylcholine receptor. This medicine is said to have anti-secretory properties, meaning that it can reduce the production of mucus in the nose. It acts on the cholinergic (muscarinic) receptors directly in the nose, and blocks the action of acetylcholine (a molecule which is responsible for the production of mucus).
This helps to block the secretion and production of nasal mucus. Treatment can help to significantly reduce the drip of mucus, helping to dry out the nose. Although it is considered to be effective in relieving a runny nose triggered by nasal inflammation in patients with allergic seasonal rhinitis or nonallergic perennial rhinitis, it is not indicated for the treatment of a blocked nose (congestion) or sneezing associated with these conditions.
Dosage and Administration
Univent Nasal Spray (Ipratropium) is provided as a 0.03 per cent strength formulation. Each metered dose spray will deliver 21mcg of the active ingredient straight to the nose. Your doctor will decide how often it needs to be administered. Adult patients may be told by their doctor to apply 2 sprays into each nostril 2 to 3 times each day when treating rhinorrhoea. However, because the best dosage can vary based on individual responses, it is necessary to listen carefully to the dosage instructions given.
