Uses
Valtrex (Valacyclovir) is broken down into an antiviral medicine by the body after it is taken. Doctors prescribe it as a treatment for genital herpes, cold sores (this includes herpes simplex 1 and 2), as well as for treating shingles (herpes zoster) and chickenpox. It works by inhibiting the action of an enzyme known as DNA polymerase, which prevents the multiplication of the virus. This helps to relieve itchiness and pain, and also helps to heal the sores, while at the same time preventing the formation of new sores. However, it will not cure the viral infection.

Dosage and Administration
The exact dose required for patients using Valtrex (Valacyclovir) tablets depends on the specific condition being treated. You must consult your doctor before starting treatment. Patients taking this drug as a treatment for herpes (affecting the genitals) are often told to take 1g by mouth, twice per day. Treatment may be continued for a period of 7 to 10 days. Should a recurrence of symptoms be noticed, your doctor may tell you to take 500mg, twice per day for 3 days. Patients who are taking this medicine to prevent a herpes outbreak may require a different dosage, and this also applies to patients treating herpes simplex, herpes zoster and any other conditions.

Side effects
Valtrex (Valacyclovir) may cause:

• Diarrhoea
• Menstrual pain
• A blocked or stuffy nose
• Pain affecting the joints
• Fatigue, a dizzy sensation or depression

If you experience any side effects, it may be necessary to inform your doctor. Remember that in some cases, severe reactions which require immediate medical care may occur. See your doctor straight away if you notice bloody urine, back pain, hallucinations, seizures, visual disturbances or any other signs of a serious reaction.

Precautions
If you are affected by HIV or AIDS, you must inform your doctor before taking this medication.

Remember that taking this medicine does not prevent transmission of herpes to others. You should avoid sexual intercourse during an outbreak. It is also important to note that it is still possible to spread herpes when no symptoms are present. Therefore, a condom or other barrier contraception method should be used at all times during intercourse, even if no symptoms are noticeable.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Valtrex (Valacyclovir) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• If you suffer from any allergies.
• If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
• If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
• If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
