Uses
Zocon Eye Drops (Fluconazole) are indicated for the treatment of fungal corneal ulcers and fungal keratitis. The active ingredient in this topical ophthalmic medicine is a triazole antifungal which works by inhibiting a certain fungal enzyme, which in turn prevents lanosterol from being converted to ergosterol. As ergosterol is considered to be a vital component of the cytoplasmic membrane, disrupting its production destroys the fungal cells and ultimately kills the fungi, leading to the eventual treatment of the infection.
These eye drops help to treat fungal keratitis (corneal inflammation caused by a fungal infection). This condition can cause redness, eye pain and blurred vision. It may occur as a result of eye trauma caused by a plant leaf or other organic material, which allows the fungus to enter the eye and grow. If this condition is deemed to be caused by a fungus that is susceptible to fluconazole, treatment with these eye drops may be recommended, to kill the fungus and allow the symptoms to heal.
Dosage and Administration
Zocon Eye Drops (Fluconazole) need to be used in strict accordance with the instructions given by your doctor. In some cases, patients treating a fungal corneal ulcer or fungal keratitis have been told by their doctor to apply 1 drop into the eye or eyes that are affected every 4 hours. This is usually continued for a period of 3 to 4 days, after which the patient may be told to apply 1 drop at 6 hour intervals for a period of 2 to 3 weeks. Patients should note that this information is only an example, and individual cases may differ. Deciding the correct dosage will be the responsibility of your doctor.
Side effects
Treatment of fungal corneal ulcers and keratitis with Zocon Eye Drops (Fluconazole) may cause some side effects. If this happens, medical attention may be necessary. Some examples include eye irritation or a stinging sensation. Serious reactions will require immediate treatment.
