Uses
Zyban (Bupropion) tablets are prescribed to patients who are addicted to nicotine, to help them quit smoking. Taking this medication to help with smoking cessation is different than other treatments, such as those that involve nicotine. It is widely believed that it works by acting on neurotransmitters in the brain (dopamine and noradrenaline). This can help to relieve irritability, anxiety and other withdrawal symptoms, while also reducing the urge to smoke.
The active ingredient in this drug has also been used as an antidepressant, and as a treatment for conditions such as seasonal affective disorder and bipolar disorder. In some cases, it has been prescribed for ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Medical studies have also explored other possible effects of this drug, such as the treatment of sexual dysfunction.
Dosage and Administration
Patients who have been prescribed Zyban (Bupropion) to help with smoking cessation should not that it is only one part of a comprehensive quit smoking plan that includes motivational support and therapy, as well as drug treatment. Counselling can greatly increase the patient's chances of successfully quitting smoking. Your doctor will tell you the correct dosage required.
Generally speaking, adult patients are told to take this drug for a period of 7 to 12 weeks. Longer treatment periods may be necessary in some cases. Doctors generally recommend that patients do not stop smoking until one week after starting treatment with this medicine. A day on which to quit should be selected by the patient during the second week of treatment. If you experience difficulty stopping smoking after 7 weeks of treatment, consult your doctor for further advice. Suddenly stopping treatment may cause withdrawal symptoms. Consult your doctor for advice on how to safely stop taking this drug.

It is important that you inform your doctor of any side effects which occur. In rare cases, patients may experience severe reactions. You will need medical care straight away if you notice fever, seizures, hallucinations, itchiness, blisters or any other serious symptoms.
Precautions
If you notice any suicidal thoughts while taking this medicine, consult your doctor immediately.
You may be told by your doctor to minimise or avoid drinking alcoholic beverages while taking this drug. This is because in rare cases, a reduced tolerance to alcohol occurred in patients taking this drug, and psychiatric reactions have also been reported.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Zyban (Bupropion) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
