Uses
Aldactone (Spironolactone) is used for various different purposes. Doctors prescribe it for treating patients with excessive aldosterone levels (hyperaldosteronism), fluid retention (oedema) occurring as a result of congestive heart failure or other conditions, and to treat low levels of potassium. In addition to this, it may be used either on its own or as part of a combination treatment plan with other drugs for treating hypertension (high blood pressure). This medicine belongs to a class of drugs called aldosterone receptor antagonists (it may also be called a water pill or potassium sparing diuretic).
Certain patients have also used this medicine to treat conditions related to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and testosterone, such as hirsutism (unwanted hair growth) and male pattern baldness. In addition to this, patients have used it as an acne treatment, and it has also become popular with male to female transgender individuals as part of hormone replacement therapy.
Dosage and Administration
Because Aldactone (Spironolactone) is prescribed for treating different medical conditions, the exact dosage required may vary considerably for each patient, depending on a number of different factors. The prescribing doctor will determine the correct dosage after a medical assessment, and it is essential that all patients strictly adhere to any dosage instructions provided. These 100mg tablets should be taken with a glass of water as directed. Adult patients are sometimes instructed to take it once per day in the morning, or else twice a day. A low dosage may be required at the start of treatment, which the prescribing doctor may gradually adjust.
