Genital warts, superficial basal cell carcinoma and genital warts | Imiquimod | Aldara 5% Cream |
Uses
Aldara 5% Cream (Imiquimod) is indicated for the treatment of genital warts, skin cancer and actinic keratoses. Types of skin cancer for which it has been used include Bowen's disease, basal cell carcinoma and certain types of malignant melanomas. Clinical trials have even been conducted to test its effects in treating molluscum contagiousum.
The primary ingredient in this topical skin cream is a type of immune response modifier. It works by triggering the body's natural defences, and causing the cells in the skin to release cytokines (chemicals which are important for the immune system). When used for genital warts, it triggers an immune system response that attacks the virus responsible for the warts, which helps the warts to heal. It treats superficial skin cancers and actinic keratosis by attacking the abnormal cells.
Dosage and Administration
Visit your doctor so that your skin condition can be diagnosed, and instructions on how and when to apply Aldara 5% Cream (Imiquimod) will also be given to you. Patients are sometimes told to apply the cream to the area that is in need of treatment twice per week just before going to bed. Doctors generally state that application of more than 1 sachet must be avoided. Treatment may continue for 16 weeks, however, the exact duration of treatment will be determined by your doctor, and will usually be individualised.
It is also important to note that the application procedure, as well as frequency of application and duration of treatment may be different for genital warts than it is for actinic keratoses or basal cell carcinomas, and for this reason it is essential that the instructions given by your doctor are strictly followed.
