Uses
Arrow-Ranitidine (Ranitidine Hydrochloride) has a wide range of indications, including treating duodenal and gastric ulcers, reflux oesophagitis (GERD) and preventing the return of ulcers. It is also used for other less common conditions such as scleroderma oesophagitis and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (a condition in which the stomach produces abnormally large amounts of acid). Patients suffering with peptic ulcers may be affected in the stomach (gastric ulcer) or in the duodenum (duodenal ulcer). Symptoms include indigestion and pain, often occurring at night time or after eating. Reflux oesophagitis may cause a burning sensation that affects the chest, which is caused by acid flowing backwards from the stomach into the oesophagus.
This drug is a type of histamine H2-receptor antagonist. It inhibits the histamine H2 receptors occurring in the stomach, preventing any histamine present in the stomach from binging to the receptors, thereby stopping the production of stomach acid. A reduced amount of stomach acid prevents the backward flow of acid into the oesophagus, thereby treating reflux oesophagitis. In addition to this, lower acid levels in the stomach allows the ulcers to heal and even provides relief from indigestion.
