Uses
Biselect 5 (Bisoprolol Fumarate) is a beta blocker medication that is used to treat high blood pressure (also called hypertension) and chronic angina pectoris. It has also been used in combination with ACE inhibitors, diuretics or other medicines for the treatment of heart failure. This medicine's mode of action involves blocking beta receptors which occur throughout the body. When stimulated by adrenaline, these receptors cause stress responses. By blocking the beta receptors in the heart, the effects that noradrenaline and adrenaline have on the heart are diminished, leading to the heart beating at a reduced pace. This in turn leads to a reduction in blood pressure, and may also treat the other conditions listed here.
Dosage and Administration
Biselect 5 (Bisoprolol Fumarate) comes as 5mg strength tablets. The correct dosage regimen will be determined by the doctor providing medical treatment. Adults being treated for hypertension may be told to start out with 5mg (one tablet) per day. The maintenance dosage for this condition ranges from 5mg to 20mg per day. Congestive heart failure patients may be instructed by their doctor to begin treatment with 1.25mg per day. The doctor may decide to increase this by 1.25mg (this adjustment may occur 48 hours later). Weekly adjustments may then be made at the discretion of the doctor, up to a maximum dosage of 5mg per day. If the patient is being given this medicine for angina, the dosage requirements may differ. In all cases, patients must strictly adhere to the dosage instructions given by their doctor.
