Uses
Ethics Enalapril (Enalapril Maleate) is effective in the management of all types of hypertension and heart failure, as well as some symptoms of left ventricular dysfunction and myocardial infarction. It works by affecting the blood vessels so as to improve the flow of blood. The main ingredient in this medicine is referred to as a prodrug, meaning that it is hydrolysed to its active component (enalaprilat) after being absorbed in the body. Its therapeutic effects are achieved by reducing the secretion of aldosterone and increasing the activity of plasma renin activity.
This is achieved by means of inhibiting ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme), which in turn helps prevent the body from producing substances which tighten the blood vessels. Treatment helps to lower blood pressure in hypertensive patients, and in those suffering from heart failure, it may help to slow down the progression of this condition and lessen the need for hospitalisation. It may also help to reduce the chances of developing heart failure in those suffering from left ventricular dysfunction.
Dosage and Administration
Ethics Enalapril (Enalapril Maleate) is provided as 10mg tablets for administration via the oral route. The rate at which they are absorbed will not be affected by the consumption of food and patients may take it with or without food. Doctors often instruct those suffering from essential hypertension to start treatment with 5mg per day, and for maintenance treatment, the dosage may be adjusted to 20mg per day (if deemed necessary by the doctor).
Patients with renovascular hypertension might be told by their doctor to initiate treatment with a low dosage (usually 2.5mg to 5mg per day). Changes to the dosage schedule may then be ordered by the doctor so as to achieve the best effects. Other conditions might need a different dosage schedule and in all cases patients must strictly adhere to the directions provided by the doctor in charge of treatment.
