High blood pressure and other conditiosns Valsartan Valzaar

Uses
Valzaar (Valsartan) is indicated for hypertension, post-myocardial infarction and heart failure. It works by inhibiting the activity of angiotensin II (a hormone than can tighten the blood vessels). This hormone occurs in the body due to a reaction in the body triggered by the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) in which angiotensin I is converted to angiotensin II.

When administered, this medicine blocks angiotensin II, which in turn affects the renin-angiotensin system (the system of hormones in the body which releases aldosterone, tightens the blood vessels and stimulates the heart and contributes to the regulation of fluid balance and blood pressure). As a result of this, the vasoconstriction and secretion of aldosterone (a hormone produced in the adrenal gland which can affect blood pressure) is stopped and the peripheral blood vessels become wider, allowing for a reduction in blood pressure.

Another benefit is that more fluid is taken out of the blood, which can also lower blood pressure. These effects can also help benefit patients with heart failure, as the heart's workload will be reduced. A number of medical studies have taken place which focused on its use in the treatment and prevention of Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

Dosage and Administration
Valzaar (Valsartan) is provided as 80mg tablets which are administered via the oral route. The dosage will be decided upon by the doctor and adjusted if deemed necessary. Adult patients undergoing medical treatment for high blood pressure are generally directed by their doctor to take 80mg or else 160mg per day as the starting dose (for monotherapy).

However, the dosage may be titrated by the doctor, and patients are often directed to take 80mg to 320mg per day. It is worth noting that not all patients will have their dosage increased. Generally, after 2 weeks of treatment, substantial antihypertensive effects are noticeable. The maximum decrease in blood pressure normally occurs 4 weeks later. Never make any changes to your dosage schedule unless following the instructions of your doctor.

Side effects
Patients undergoing treatment with Valzaar (Valsartan) should note that side effects are possible, including:

  • Dizziness
  • Arthralgia
  • Blurry eyesight
  • Symptoms of a cold
  • Postural hypotension

Tell your doctor about any side effects which occur during the course of treatment. Certain reactions can occur which are considerably more serious to those listed above. Present yourself at the hospital immediately if you notice breathlessness, a reduction in urination, weight gain, high potassium levels, inflammation or any other severe reactions that have not been mentioned here.

Precautions
Blood tests may be ordered by your doctor to monitor your blood potassium levels.

If you are sitting or lying down, it is possible that you may become dizzy if you get up too fast. To avoid this, take your time and get up slowly.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Valzaar (Valsartan) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
