Uses
Valzaar (Valsartan) is used to lower blood pressure in those affected by hypertension. This is considered important, as high blood pressure puts the patient at risk of serious cardiovascular events, myocardial infarctions and strokes. Antihypertensive drugs such as this one are used to control blood pressure, and thereby lower the risk of serious health complications. In addition to medical treatment, other cardiovascular risk management measures are usually recommended, including the control of lipids and diabetes, antithrombotic treatment, limiting the intake of sodium, quitting smoking and exercise.
The active ingredient in this drug is known as an ARB (angiotensin receptor blocker) and it helps to reduce blood pressure by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a hormone which plays a key role in the regulation of blood pressure. It can make the blood vessels become narrow, which increases blood flow resistance. Treatment with this drug aims to reverse this by relaxing the walls of the blood vessel and causing it to become narrow, thereby resulting in decreased blood pressure.
Dosage and Administration
Valzaar (Valsartan) comes as tablets containing 160mg of the active ingredient. The doctor providing treatment will individualise the dosage for the patient, with factors such as the severity of the condition and medical history being taken into consideration. Generally, adults are told to start out with a dosage ranging from 80mg to 160mg taken once per day when the medicine is being taken as a monotherapy. However, patients who need a higher reduction in blood pressure may be told to take a higher dosage. If deemed necessary, the doctor may also adjust the dosage. Patients generally report that 2 to 4 weeks of treatment are needed before control of blood pressure is achieved.
