Uses
Atacand (Candesartan Cilexetil) is indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure, so as to help reduce the risk of serious health complications which can often occur as a result of this condition. Its mode of action involves inhibiting angiotensin II activity. There may be cases where doctors will use it together with other antihypertensive medicines. Other conditions for which patients have been treated with this medicine for include heart failure in those affected by left ventricular systolic dysfunction and the prevention of kidney damage in patients with type 2 diabetes.
This medicine is a prodrug, and when absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, it is converted to the active form. A hormone in the body called angiotensin II can cause symptoms such as vasoconstriction (tightening of the blood vessels leading to higher blood pressure) and can also trigger the release of aldosterone, a hormone which can affect sodium and water, causing it to be retained in the kidneys.
By inhibiting the effects of angiotensin II (such as the narrowing of blood vessels and the secretion of aldosterone) in the body tissues and adrenal gland, this medicine allows for a reduction of pressure within the blood vessels, which in turn may contribute to a lowering of blood pressure and an improvement in circulation.
Dosage and Administration
Patients who are given Atacand (Candesartan Cilexetil) as part of a regular treatment schedule should note that regular blood pressure checks are essential. The medicine can be taken either with or without food. Patients generally require 2 to 4 weeks of treatment before effective control of blood pressure is achieved. If no improvement in symptoms occurs after 4 weeks, your doctor may need to consider other options.
Adults who are being treated for congestive heart failure may be directed to begin treatment with an initial dosage of 4mg administered once per day. Some doctors may increase the dosage at 2 week intervals if it is well tolerated by the patient, until the target daily dosage of 32mg is achieved. However, any adjustments are dependent on the patient's response and the expert opinion of a doctor. Do not increase your dosage unless obeying the instructions of your doctor.
Side effects

Side effects must be reported to your doctor, especially if they are bothersome. Reports of severe reactions are less common. However, you must consult your doctor as soon as you can if urination problems, unexplained increases in body weight, signs of high potassium or any other serious side effects occur.
