Uses
Atacand (Candesartan Cilexetil) is prescribed to reduce high blood pressure, and to improve the efficiency of the heart's ability to pump blood in patients affected by heart failure. This drug is a type of angiotensin II receptor antagonist.
Its method of action involves inhibiting the actions of the substances that cause the blood vessels to narrow, while also blocking the action of a hormone called aldosterone in the kidneys. This hormone allows the kidneys to retain water and salt, thereby increasing the volume of fluid in the blood vessels. Blocking its action reduces the fluid in the blood vessels, which in turn contributes to a reduction in high blood pressure.
Dosage and Administration
Patients being treated with Atacand (Candesartan Cilexetil) tablets will be prescribed a dosage considered by the prescribing doctor to be sufficient. All directions given by your doctor must be followed strictly. If you are an adult patient treating hypertension, it is possible that you will be told to take 16mg per day at first. This may then be adjusted by your doctor, and you may be directed to take 8mg to 32mg per day. Treatment of other conditions, such as congestive heart failure will require a different dosage.
